Michael Will

Michael Will was initially appointed President of the State Office for Data Protection Supervision on 1 February 2020 and again on 1 February 2025, for a term of five years in each instance. After studying law in Würzburg and completing his legal training in Bamberg, he began his professional career in 1995 at the Government of Upper Franconia in Bayreuth as an administrative lawyer in the service of the Free State of Bavaria. In 2009, Michael Will was appointed head of the ‘Data Protection’ division at the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, Sport and Integration. There, he also served as the official data protection officer and was a member of the Data Protection Commission of the Bavarian State Parliament. On behalf of the Bundesrat, from 2012 to 2015 he participated in all the deliberations of the Council Working Group on Data Protection and Information Exchange (DAPIX) on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and also fulfilled the role of observer for the federal states on the committee established under Article 93 of the GDPR, which is involved, for example, in the adoption of adequacy decisions by the European Commission.
